Police Searching for Man Accidently Released From Prison

A man charged with attempted murder in DeKalb County was mistakenly released from a state prison last week.

A warrant has been issued for Brandon A. Washington, 20, of Aurora, Lt. Gary Spangler said Wednesday. Washington was charged last May with shooting a DeKalb man in the face. His bond was set at $1.25 million on charges of attempted murder, mob action and aggravated discharge of a firearm.

Washington was on parole when he was charged, so the Illinois Department of Corrections took him from the county jail to serve a sentence for violating his parole, DeKalb County First Assistant State's Attorney Bill Engerman said. At the end of that sentence, he was to return to the county to await trial.

When his sentence ended March 15, IDOC checked for active warrants and, finding none, released him, spokeswoman Januari Smith said.

"They should have put a warrant out, then we would have seen it and called to let them know he was set to discharge," she said.

There were no warrants because Washington was already in custody and had not posted bond, Engerman said. IDOC knew he was facing charges and had brought him back twice for court dates, he said, and did not notify the state's attorney or sheriff of his release.
