A unit designed to rehabilitate some of the country's most violent offenders has opened in Christchurch. The Matapuna Special Treatment unit aims to ease criminals back into the community and keep them on the right side of the law. Many of the offenders have been in and out of prison all their lives. It is hoped the opening of new unit will make this their last time in jail. "A lot of these guys are in here for life, and a lot of them are for violence offences, some for sexual offences and that's pretty serious stuff," says Maori Party co-leader Pita Sharples. "If you want to keep them away then they've got to confront what they've done." The unit emphasises the importance of being mentally prepared to resist or avoid criminal opportunities. It also teaches them how to cope with life on the outside again. "The men leave knowing exactly what their risk factors are, knowing exactly what they need to do to keep themselves and those around them safe," says Steve Berry, Department of Corrections.
