LANSING, Mich. - State legislators are continuing to pare down Michigan's prison population to help cut costs. Pew Center on the States reports that, last year, the state prison population declined by almost seven percent. This week, the state Senate passed a corrections department budget that cuts $60 million more than the governor has recommended. Richard Jerome, manager of the Public Safety Performance Project for Pew, says cutting costs is important, but Pew is working with legislators on a bill that would also invest some of those savings in re-entry programs and training for inmates before they are released. "It requires that inmates serve a hundred percent to a hundred-twenty percent of their court-ordered sentence. What it also does is it ensures that you don't have offenders who serve their maximum sentence and then walk out the prison door without any kind of supervision or programming."
