Two juveniles who authorities say used a tire iron to assault a counselor and escape from a transport van were arrested Monday evening after a daylong search in Otter Tail County (Minn.). The male youths, ages 15 and 17, were riding in a van on Highway 10 from a detention center in Moorhead to Wadena County District Court for hearings when they escaped about 9 a.m. near Bluffton, 10 miles of northwest of Wadena, the Otter Tail County Sheriff's Department said. After a search that enlisted the aid of a Minnesota State Patrol helicopter, the youths were caught near Bluffton about 6:11 p.m., the Sheriff's Department said. No details of the arrests were available Monday night. The van's driver, Corey Walters, was struck three times with a tire iron about the head and shoulders, forcing Walters to stop the van, said Barry Steen, director of the West Central Regional Juvenile Center in Moorhead. The youths, who were wearing leg shackles, then smashed out a window and ran off, Steen said. The youths apparently found the tire iron in a compartment in the floor of the van where the spare tire is kept, he said. Walters was taken to a Wadena hospital where he received 13 stitches and was released, Steen said, adding Walters is expected to return to work Wednesday. |
