Drug Charges Hold 74 Year Old Woman

NEW CASTLE --To say that New Castle resident Phyllis J. Williams is older than most other accused drug dealers in East Central Indiana might be an understatement.

The 74-year-old Williams, who has a history of drug-related arrests, was apprehended again this week after city police said they found a selection of OxyContin tablets, neatly divided by color and dosage, in the senior citizen's pickup truck.

Williams, of 214 S. 27th St., has been charged with dealing in a narcotic drug, a Class B felony carrying a standard 10-year prison term, along with five Class D felonies, each with a standard 18-month sentence: Four counts of possession of a controlled substance, and maintaining a common nuisance. She was being held in the Henry County jail Thursday under a $37,750 bond.

City police officer Justin Wardlow pulled over Williams' truck at 15th and Vine streets Tuesday afternoon after noticing the vehicle had expired license plates.

Informed by a member of the Henry County Drug Task Force, via radio, that Williams had prior arrests on drug-related charges, the officer asked the New Castle woman if she objected to having her vehicle searched.

Williams said she had no problem with a search, so long as she could sit down while it was under way.

Unfortunately, this is becoming very common in the county jails. At the detention center I work at we have a dozen or more inmates over the age of 70. All have found that selling their prescribed drugs can be profitable. In this day and age when economic times are tough on elderly and the doctors that will prescribe just about anything, the temptation to sell their drugs are just to great for some. The cost to house and take care of the real medical needs of the elderly can be an enormous cost to burden to a small county jail. But, what are we to do it is still illegal and they are breaking the law.
