During the early morning hours of Sept. 8, 1998, a 35-year-old woman woke to the frantic ringing of her doorbell at her home on Shelton Circle. Her husband had just left for work, and when she looked out the window, she saw a strange man beating on her door. She refused to open it, and when he screamed to let him inside, she ran to get a gun. The man kicked in her front door, busting the frame off, then beat and sexually assaulted the woman in front of her 2-year-old son. Her newborn daughter lay sleeping in her crib in the next room. After tying her to a shower rod, the man left. Police later identified and arrested Gerrard E. Robinson and charged him with aggravated rape, aggravated burglary and aggravated assault. Robinson, then 22, pleaded guilty to rape in September 2000 and was sentenced to 10 years in the Tennessee Department of Corrections. The woman moved out of state, but she kept tabs on Robinson, searching for his name online every few months. A year after Robinson was released, she found his name again, and old wounds reopened.
