An inmate at the Orleans Parish jail was stabbed to death by another inmate Monday and a second inmate wounded after being stabbed by a different man, said the Orleans Parish Criminal Sheriff's Office and New Orleans Police Department.

Chris Blevins, 22, died at the Interim LSU Public Hospital about 2:30 p.m., Criminal Sheriff Marlin Gusman's office reported in a statement. He died during surgery about two hours after the stabbing during the jail's midday meal.

The wounded inmate, who is 24, was not identified.

Late Monday, NOPD announced that Ortiz Jackson, 34, an inmate in the jail, was booked with second-degree murder in the fatal stabbing. Donald Moore, 24, was booked with attempted second degree murder in the second stabbing. Police did not say whether the two stabbings were related or what motivated them.

A jail spokesman initially said Blevins suffered a "puncture wound," but the office declined to provide further details saying only that he had beein involved in an "altercation" with another inmate..

John Gagliano, chief investigator for the coroner, said Monday evening that the coroner's office had not yet examined the man's wounds.

NOPD spokesman Bob Young said the agency's homicide unit is investigating the slaying, along with the sheriff's office. The Orleans Parish district attorney's office has also been notified, according to a sheriff's office statement.
