An inmate at the Perry Correctional Institution in South Carolina was charged Tuesday in connection with the stabbing of two officers at the facility last month. The State Law Enforcement Division said 23-year-old Travis David Chavis was charged with two counts of assault and battery with intent to kill and one count of concealing a weapon. Warrants said Chavis was being removed from his cell for a shower on May 26 when he attacked Officer Thomas Calhoun and Officer Gregory Fodor with a homemade weapon made of a sharpened piece of wire. Both men are recovering from their wounds. Chavis was serving a 16-year sentence at Perry for a variety of charges including kidnapping and assault and battery with intent to kill. Perry is a high-security prison designed primarily to house violent offenders with longer sentences. |
