| Closing Camp Saves Money, but at a Price |

Local officials are being proactive after learning the state may close the door on cheap labor. Virginia's Department of Corrections is facing tough fiscal choices as it struggles with managing inmate population and a shrinking budget. It looks to curtail spending by closing two detention facilities. Camp #17, a work-camp detention center located in Haynesville, may be considered for closure. "Based on Camp #17's age it is on a list of possibilities," said 99th District Delegate Albert Pollard. Pollard believes the decision to close facilities is shortsighted. "It might save the DOC money," said Pollard. "But it would cost the taxpayer." County Administrator Bill Duncanson agrees and supports efforts to keep the facility open. "Inmates maintain parks, roads, and assist in storm damage cleaning," said Duncanson. "It is a source of needed manpower." Read More. |
