After a 14-hour search by land and air, Blaine police called off a manhunt Tuesday evening for a man who led officers on a chase and stabbed a police dog.

Police considered the suspect, L.C. Wesley Armstrong, armed and dangerous as they looked for him in a wooded area in the northern end of the city. Armstrong is no stranger to police, with previous convictions for second-degree manslaughter and first-degree burglary.

Meanwhile, his father said his son was a good person. He feared the search could turn deadly and pleaded with his son to turn himself in.

The pursuit began about 3:45 a.m. Tuesday, when Minneapolis police pulled Armstrong over during a routine traffic stop near 35th and Penn avenues, said Minneapolis police spokesman Sgt. Jesse Garcia.

After police saw an open bottle in the minivan, the driver and a female passenger fled. They reached the Blaine area, where the Minnesota State Patrol put out stop sticks that disabled the vehicle at 125th Avenue Northeast just east of Lexington Avenue.

The man and the female passenger fled into a wooded area nearby. Police found an empty gun holster and magazine clip in the vehicle.
