Authorities yesterday identified an inmate as the primary suspect in a fire that caused the evacuation of the Vanderburgh County (Ind.) Jail. Investigators believe that Derek D. Fingers, 24, started Tuesday's fire in a cell he was sharing with more than two dozen other inmates, Chief Deputy Eric Williams said. Fingers was jailed while awaiting trial on seven charges that include battery on law enforcement to possession of narcotics. During a hearing today, Vanderburgh Circuit Judge Carl A. Heldt revoked the $500 cash bond on which Fingers was being held, said Vanderburgh County Prosecutor Stan Levco. Levco would not confirm that Fingers was a suspect in the case, but said a suspect was identified and the case against the individual would go before a Vanderburgh Circuit grand jury yesterday. About 220 inmates have been moved to neighboring counties since the Tuesday morning fire on the jail's third floor that caused the evacuation of about 350 inmates, Williams said. Other inmates have been returned to the second floor of the jail. One jail employee and five inmates were treated for smoke inhalation, Sheriff Brad Ellsworth said. It could be several days before the entire jail is open, Ellsworth said. The fire apparently started when inmates set a stack of mattresses and clothes on fire, Ellsworth said. He said the fire started in a cell that was designed to hold 16 people but was holding 28 inmates. Additional suspects could be named in the case, Williams said. |
