| 109 Face Deportation From New Program |

The Prince George's County corrections department has turned over 109 foreign-born people to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for deportation proceedings since the department began participating in a federal program in December to screen inmates' immigration status. The Secure Communities program identifies people who are in the country illegally by comparing fingerprints of all inmates entering the county Department of Corrections against a federal database. If a person has been in ICE custody before, their fingerprints will trigger a match and ICE agents will investigate, said ICE spokesman Richard Rocha. Agents also will investigate individuals whose fingerprints are not in the database but are suspected of being in the county illegally. If individuals are in the county legally, for example on a work or tourist visa, and commit a crime, they could also be deported. Read More. |
