| Tower Closing Concern For Guards |

HUNTINGDON - Several community leaders and the Pennsylvania State Corrections Officers Association have concerns over the state Department of Corrections' recent decision to use cameras instead of around-the-clock corrections officers manning the towers at five state correctional institutions. The affected state prisons are Huntingdon, Rockview, Camp Hill, Dallas and Graterford. Secretary of Corrections Jeffrey A. Beard said advancements in technology and upgrades to perimeter security will allow the DOC to reduce staffing levels at the towers without compromising safety. The corrections officers association placed ads Wednesday in newspapers near the prisons, calling the towers the "last line of defense" for the public. "I have grown up in sight of those towers since day one," said Jeffrey Shaffer, Smithfield Township supervisors chairman. "I have concerns both as a supervisor and as a citizen. No matter how good the technology is, there are always flaws in technology." Shaffer said that he has heard from some township residents on the issue and said the supervisors could discuss sending a letter to the DOC at next week's workshop. Read More. |
