An inmate who escaped from the Stillwater prison in Minn. Monday afternoon, June 7, was apprehended less than an hour after officers realized he was gone, said Susan Nau, acting associate warden of administration at the prison, formally known as the Minnesota Correctional Facility-Bayport. Serving what could be as much as a 25-month sentence for forgery in the prison's minimum security quarters, inmate Mark Vaughn walked away from the prison property sometime Monday, June 7, afternoon, Nau said. The area is not surrounded by a security fence or retaining wall, which is standard practice for all Department of Corrections' minimum security facilities. Officers realized around 4:55 p.m. Monday, June 7, an inmate from the prison quarters was missing, Nau said, and immediately instituted an emergency counting process to identify that inmate was Vaughn. Law enforcement from Oak Park Heights, Bayport, Stillwater and Washington County were notified of the escape, Nau said, as were area residents through an outdoor siren and automated telephone-alert-system that calls residents at their homes. Washington County Sheriff's deputies apprehended Vaughn at about 5:40 p.m., near the baseball fields at Stillwater Area High School. Vaughn is being held in the Washington County Jail, Nau said, and will likely be charged with escape. He will also likely lose his minimum-security status, Nau said, and his scheduled release date set for February will probably be pushed back. Prison escapes are not frequent events, Nau said. |
