VT Teacher Enters Guilty Plea

BARRE – A former Twinfield Union School teacher pleaded guilty on Wednesday to sexual exploitation of a minor, a crime he was charged with in May 2009 for his contact with a 16-year-old female student who attended the Marshfield school.

John V. Buttura Jr., 55, of Waterbury Center, entered guilty pleas in Vermont District Court in Barre to the sexual exploitation charge, along with four charges of violating his conditions of release for having contact with the victim against court orders and for violating his curfew as the case was pending.

Buttura was charged with 11 counts of violating his conditions of release – most of them for allegedly contacting the victim – and seven of those charges were dismissed in the agreement.

Buttura was the first person in Vermont ever to be charged with sexual exploitation of a minor. The Legislature created the law in March 2009 as part of a bill that made sweeping changes to how the state investigates, prosecutes and tries to prevent sex crimes. Buttura's conduct was not criminal before the law passed because 16 years old is the age of consent in Vermont. His "sexual relationship" with the 16-year-old female student began just weeks before the law took effect, according to court papers.

The sexual exploitation charge Buttura pleaded to, however, is not the same one he was charged with. Buttura was first charged with a felony version of the crime, but the one he pleaded guilty to Wednesday is a misdemeanor.
