CALICO ROCK — Longtime Arkansas Rep. John Miller of Melbourne was applauded frequently here Thursday as employees and friends of the Arkansas Department of Correction's North Central Unit celebrated 20 years of service to the state. Elderly and now-retired, Miller was unable to attend the event. But that didn't stop the frequent invocation of his name throughout the luncheon. "If he hadn't stayed put, this unit would not be here today," said Benny Magness, chairman of the Arkansas Department of Corrections Board. "He did not waiver." The facility now employs 179 and has a capacity for 580 inmates. Warden David White donned a "No Prison" button that was common apparel for those opposed to the prison two decades ago. White said a loud minority of citizens of the Calico Rock area fought to keep the prison from opening. State Rep. Paul Miller of Melbourne, the elder Mill-er's nephew, said those jobs likely had something to do with the area's ability to support public schools and a local hospital. The Calico Rock community by being home to the North Central Unit also serves the state by supporting an important element the state's corrections system. Read More. |
