Tex. inmates hurt in van crash

Several prisoners being transferred to the Tarrant County Jail were hurt Friday morning when the van in which they were riding was struck by another vehicle in downtown Fort Worth.
Police sealed off a 4 to 6 block area of Sundance Square to maintain security and to investigate the accident.
There were 10 inmates and two deputies in the van when the accident occurred shortly before 11 a.m. in the 500 block of Houston St. Officials said the van, from Dallas County, was hit by a vehicle driven by an 89-year-old driver.
The white van then crashed into two parked cars.
Emergency workers and police swarmed to the scene. Eight handcuffed prisoners were taken to local hospitals for treatment. There did not appear to be any serious injuries.
"The fact that they're prisoners does complicate it a little bit," said Fort Worth police Lt. Billy Cordell. "We have additional responsibilities to maintain care, custody and control of those persons in custody."
Cordell said police officers would accompany the prisoners to the hospital until Tarrant County Sheriff's Department deputies can assume control.
The two Dallas deputies in the van were not hurt.
