Boot-Camp Program Saved in Miami-Dade

These young men may soon be heading to jail, because the money to keep them in a county sponsored boot camp program is running out.

The Miami-Dade County Commission reversed itself on Tuesday and decided to fund the boot camp program that has served as a model for success across the nation. The boot camp program has been run by the Miami-Dade Corrections Department for years, but was recently scheduled to be stopped to save the county $2 million per year.

The program uses discipline with education to change the mindset of young offenders. If the program had stopped, most of the participants back to prison where little is done to rehabilitate inmates. The program has a 20 percent recidivism rate, which is much better than the national recidivism rate of 65 percent.
