| Prisoner Releases Would Increase with Cuts |

A budget plan that would release hundreds of offenders into the community is drawing outrage over public safety. The Vermont Senate has passed and sent to the House a budget plan that could save $10 million, but the city of Barre said the cost will amount to much more. One by one, Barre citizens took the microphone Tuesday night, many saying that if a bill aimed to cut $10 million from the Department of Corrections passes, they would fear for their safety. "This community can tolerate no more," said Sue Poczobut, of Barre. "What does it say to our children, or to all our residents for that matter, if we lower our standards just because it's expediential?" said Marcia Blondolillo, of Barre. The issue centers around a bill passed through the state Senate that would free 200 nonviolent prisoners from jail starting July 1. Read More. |
