Two former jailers have pleaded guilty in Cumberland County (N.C.) Superior Court to conveying messages and weapons to inmates. Latoya Christel Swartz, 26, pleaded guilty to three felony counts and was sentenced to a minimum of a year in prison. Promises Malloy Ward, 25, pleaded guilty to four counts and was sentenced to a minimum of six months in prison. The two Cumberland County jailers, who entered their pleas and were sentenced last Monday, were charged in August with having sex with inmates and selling them alcohol, drugs and other items. Swartz was originally charged with 25 felonies, including four counts of having sex with someone accused of murder. She pleaded guilty as part of an agreement with the state in which she promised to testify against Ward. Ward was originally charged with eight felonies, including having sex with an inmate and selling them cell phones. Ward pleaded guilty and agreed to testify against Swartz. The state dismissed four felony charges against Ward in exchange for her guilty plea. |
