| Sex Offender Registration Laws Tightened |

To preserve and protect Kansas communities, Governor Mark Parkinson signed HB 2468 into law today, requiring a convicted person to register as a sex offender for life. "Keeping our communities safe is one of my utmost priorities as governor; therefore, I am glad to sign this legislation that helps keep Kansans informed about people living in their neighborhoods," said Parkinson. "Sex offenders commit some of the most heinous acts in our society to many times the most vulnerable. It is critical that these offenders remain registered for the rest of their life in order to better protect Kansas families, and I appreciate the swift work of the legislature in getting this bill passed." HB 2468 amends the Kansas Offender Registration Act to require a person convicted of any attempt, conspiracy, or criminal solicitation of certain sex crimes to register for life. The following sex crimes would require lifetime registration; the attempt, conspiracy, or criminal solicitation to commit aggravated trafficking, rape, aggravated indecent liberties with a child, aggravated criminal sodomy, promoting prostitution if the prostitute is less than 14 years of age, and sexual exploitation of a child. Currently, the Kansas Offender Registration Act requires a person convicted of these crimes to register for ten years. The bill takes effect upon its publication in the Kansas Statute Book.
