DECATUR - A Decatur man who was released from prison on parole in January will be returned to the Illinois Department of Corrections soon, after he was arrested on new drug and weapons charges. Deangelo Cook Jr., 27, was released from Danville Correctional Center on Jan. 15, after serving 2½ years of a six-year sentence for a 2007 home invasion/causing bodily harm, which occurred in Macon County. At 1:20 a.m. March 20, Cook was stopped by Decatur police officers who were conducting a roadside traffic checkpoint at 22nd and Locust streets, according to a sworn statement by a Decatur police officer filed in Macon County Circuit Court. As the 1995 Mercury Cougar that Cook was riding in approached the checkpoint, an auxiliary officer observed that something was thrown from the passenger side window. When officers approached the car, an officer saw Cook trying to shove something into a space between the front passenger seat and the center console. Officers ordered Cook out of the vehicle. The police were then informed that the objects that had been flung from the vehicle were a .22-caliber semiautomatic handgun and a black metal pipe, which gave off the odor of burned cannabis. After police officers handcuffed Cook, they allegedly found a bag containing 13 individually wrapped crack cocaine rocks inside his pants. The police allege that Cook admitted that he threw the handgun out of the car. Cook has been charged with armed violence, being an armed habitual criminal, unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver within 1,000 feet of school property and unlawful possession of a controlled substance.
