| Lack of Communication Releases Wanted Inmate |

Wake County, N.C. - An investigation is underway into how Bertie County released an inmate wanted for murder in Wake County. Bertie jailers released William Bryant Jr. last week after he completed a sentence on drug charges. The break down revolves around a document called the detainer. It’s what agencies use to notify the Department of Corrections that they want an inmate once he is released. It’s a document that the Department of Corrections say, in this case, never made it. It was at West Lake elementary school where police say William Bryant and his brother murdered a cab driver in 1999, but tonight, Bryant is on the loose, all because of a piece of paper. Pam Walker, with the Department of Corrections, says that paper, the detainer, is a vital document. “There was no detainer. We had no record of any detainer in the case and without that retainer we lose the consistence we need state wide as far as releasing inmates,“ said Walker. Read More. |
