The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections has announced plans to cut 24-hour staffing of guard towers at five state prisons, including the facility near Dallas. Nearby residents are worried. People gathered for a special meeting Thursday night in Jackson Township to voice their concerns to officials with the Department of Corrections. The idea doesn't sit well with Bob Yurksis who lives near the State Correctional Institution near Dallas. "I think they are making a mistake. Those towers protect us. Those towers keep the people inside," said Yurksis. Yurksis points to what happened in 1999. Authorities were forced to launch a manhunt when a convicted murderer and a serial arsonist escaped at a time when guard towers were unmanned. "This is asinine, said Donald McNany, the president of the Pennsylvania Corrections Officers Association."This is a ludicrous idea. Those towers are put there for a reason. They are there to secure the perimeter and maintain and control the inmates in those facilities." Read More. |
