Prison Staff Cuts Alarm Residents

JACKSON TWP. - The memory of August 1999, when the towers at State Correctional Institution at Dallas were unmanned and two felons escaped, is still fresh in the minds of many Back Mountain residents.

Patti Leonard recalled the effect it had on her daughter Ashlee, then 11.

"My daughter called me at work, hysterical: 'Mommy, there were guards on our bus, armed, looking for somebody who escaped,'" Leonard said. "The school went on lockdown, which is traumatizing for these kids."

For budgetary reasons, the state Department of Corrections is removing 24-hour staffing from the five state correctional institutions that have them, including SCI-Dallas. The move has residents worried for their families' safety.

State Sen. Lisa Baker, R-Lehman Township, and the Jackson Township supervisors held a meeting Wednesday for residents to voice their concerns to state prison officials and state Reps. Karen Boback, R-Harveys Lake and John Yudichak, D-Nanticoke.

On Aug. 16, 1999, two convicts from Philadelphia - Michael McCloskey, who was serving a life sentence for second-degree murder, robbery, and carrying a firearm, and Anthony William Yang, who was serving 20 to 50 years for arson - escaped.
