The lives of 25 Waikato prisoners have been saved by prison staff over the last five years, new figures reveal, with prisoners across the country trying to kill themselves using everything from apple stalks to their own fingernails, the Corrections Department says. In each case the prisoners, at either Waikeria or Tongariro/Rangipo, had self harmed and would have died without staff intervention. However, 26 did take their own lives. Prisoner-on-prisoner assaults had climbed markedly in the past three years, possibly contributing to a "more volatile prison environment", the department said. Prison Services assistant general manager Leanne Field said it was incredibly difficult to stop people who wanted to harm themselves.
