CHELSEA — Shelly L. Garno was 25 last summer when she gave birth to her son in prison. The then-St. Charles resident was about seven months pregnant last May when Saginaw County Circuit Judge Fred L. Borchard sentenced her to prison for twice violating the probation she was on for a May 2007 cocaine possession conviction. Last month, Garno told a group that included Borchard and fellow Circuit Judge Darnell Jackson and state Department of Corrections officials that she was “resentful” when Borchard sentenced her to two to four years. But instead of sending her to traditional prison, Borchard placed Garno in the corrections department’s Special Alternative Incarceration facility in Chelsea, 20 miles west of Ann Arbor. “I was mad at Judge Borchard because I thought it was his fault, but it wasn’t,” she told the group. “I’m a different person now.” Read More. |
