| County to Spend $20M in Jail Plan |

Holland, MI — Designers of the new Allegan County jail are moving ahead with plans for 400 beds and fewer staff. The goal — reduce building costs to $20 million or less. “I think we’re at a palatable plan for most of you. It’s a very efficient plan, very efficient,” Joseph Mrak, senior vice president of RQAW, the firm designing the new facility, told the Allegan County Board of Commissioners. The board approved a basic plan for jail and sheriff’s office complex on 22 acres at 640 River St. in Allegan on Thursday. Mrak will return to the board in about four weeks with more details about the facility and possible cost-cutting options. “Based on what I know, it’s too rich in construction and staffing,” said Commissioner Steve McNeal who represents Holland city and Fillmore Township.
