An inmate that authorities say was beaten by other prisoners at the Santa Fe County (N.M.) Detention Center has died. Thirty-two-year-old Dickie Ortega of Chimayo died last Saturday at St. Vincent Hospital. He suffered head and facial injuries and a crushed larynx in the attack last Friday afternoon. Jail officials say Ortega and his cousin, 29-year-old Brad Ortega, were beaten inside a cell after being dragged by other inmates from a recreation area. Brad Ortega was treated and released from the hospital and placed in protective custody at the jail. Four inmates were charged with murder and aggravated battery. They are 31-year-old Daniel Good, 28-year-old Jesus Aviles-Dominguez, 36-year-old Joe Corriz and 25-year-old Lawrence Gallegos. Good, Aviles-Dominguez and Corriz are from Santa Fe. Gallegos was listed as a homeless person. The Ortegas were arrested earlier in the week by state police on drug charges, along with charges of larceny, car theft, and receiving stolen property. |
