| Fears Rise Over Probation Plan |

A proposed probation centre located inside a former church has local residents up in arms and threatening to move if it goes ahead. Last week Taradale Rd residents were advised the Department of Corrections has applied to establish a probation and psychological service centre at the site of a building formerly occupied by Destiny Church. Napier City Council senior planner Paul O'Shaughnessy wrote it would generate 1500 extra vehicle movements per week and a demand for an extra 225 carparks. Mr O'Shaughnessy said the consent was being processed on a "limited notification" basis with businesses within Taradale Road, Austin Street, Carnegie Road and Dunlop Road block "adversely" affected. The adverse environmental effects considered were increased traffic and parking on the service lane and reverse sensitivity - where non-industrial establishments are set up within an industrial zone.
