BENTON HARBOR — Berrien County Prosecutor Art Cotter said the state's decision to release a prisoner after 3 1/2 years played a role in a 4-year-old Benton Harbor girl being shot Friday. Cotter said Monday Donnell Williams was serving a three- to 20-year term for assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder. The Michigan State Parole Board released him on Jan. 7, during a time the state has proposed releasing prisoners early to cut the state deficit. Cotter, though, said Williams, 34, was not ready to be free. What happened on Friday night in Benton Harbor, the prosecutor said, is why. Williams was reportedly on Lavette Avenue when he recognized a man with whom he had a previous argument sitting in a car. Williams allegedly retrieved a gun, came back and started shooting at the car, witnesses reported. Between five to 10 shots were fired, and 4-year-old Zaniya Anderson was hit by a stray bullet while playing in her dad's front yard in the 700 block of Lavette. Read More. |
