Oakdale, Ia. — Deputy Warden Greg Ort waits between two locked doorways in the Iowa Medical and Classification Center. After a minute, a guard buzzes him in. He walks past the inmate library and the pickleball court. Iowa's foremost prison for the mentally ill smells like an old hospital: sterile but worn, with the scent of cafeteria food wafting through halls. After sentencing, all inmates come to this prison in the cornfields north of Coralville. So will Mark Becker, 24, convicted last month in the 2009 shooting death of Aplington-Parkersburg High School football coach Ed Thomas. Judge Stephen Carroll will sentence him today to life without parole, the mandatory sentence for his first-degree-murder conviction. At the state prison known simply as Oakdale, inmates flow in and out, 500 a month, staying roughly 40 days for a reception period before being shipped to other prisons. Sexual predators go to Mount Pleasant. Those with substance abuse problems go to Fort Dodge or Newton. Dangerous offenders go to maximum-security penitentiaries in Anamosa and Fort Madison.
