Pennsylvania has moved 129 prisoners from Schuylkill County to Virginia.

"We were well prepared for the move," Bernadette Mason, public information officer at State Correctional Institution/Mahanoy, said Tuesday afternoon. "We gave them (inmates) 24 hours notice. We had the facility locked down."

The state Department of Corrections is moving prisoners out of state to alleviate overcrowding. When completed, 2,117 male prisoners will be moved to Michigan and Virginia, according to Susan Bensinger, DOC deputy press secretary.

No female prisoners are being transferred.

So far, 1,117 inmates have been moved to Michigan and 516 to Virginia. Another 484 will be moved to Virginia in the coming weeks.
