| Statement on Disturbance at Hudson Correctional Facility |

JUNEAU – Commissioner Joe Schmidt has issued the following statement: A disturbance by eight Alaska inmates at the department’s contract facility at Hudson, Colorado ended early this morning without injuries to staff. The disturbance was limited to the segregation unit. Some inmates involved reported minor injuries. The incident began at 1:30am when eight of 41 inmates in the segregation unit refused to return to their cells. Staff at the unit remained in a secure area while a response team was assembled. There was no fire, however the inmates triggered a fire alarm which brought a response from the local fire department. The Department is initiating an investigation into this incident with the assistance of the Colorado Department of Corrections Office of Inspector General. The Hudson Correctional Facility is a contract facility owned and operated by Cornell Companies. There are 877 Alaska inmates at the facility, which opened in November, 2009. Only Alaska inmates are housed at Hudson. |
