Positives of GPS Tracking Questioned

Parole agents keeping a state promise to track sex offenders more vigilantly are finding the new strategy is tying them to their desks and keeping them from important field work, their union says.

Agents previously used satellite tracking data as needed, but must now conduct daily reviews of high-risk sex offenders. They have to log every electronic alert and potential violation and document how every breach is resolved.

Parole officials say GPS monitoring is part of an overall strategy that improves supervision. But the issue is likely to come up at today’s meeting in Sacramento of the Sex Offender Management Board, which warned in a report last week about reliance on the technology.
