Fewer Iowa Board Members Could Hault Paroles

The Iowa Board of Parole is losing three of its five members because of a resignation and retirements, which is creating worries that normal paroles could suddenly be halted.

"We can't release anybody with just two people. It has to be at least three" board members to authorize paroles, parole board Chairwoman Elizabeth Robinson said Wednesday. "What do you do? If it's time for inmates to be reviewed, I want to make sure that happens."

Parole board member Walter Reed of Waterloo, appointed by Gov. Chet Culver last May, left Wednesday to accept a job with the Iowa Department of Transportation.
