| AL Called Upon To Stop HIV Segregation |

Two human rights organizations have told the Alabama Department of Corrections that segregating its HIV-positive inmates is both discriminatory and a serious human rights violation. A report released this week -- "Sentenced to Stigma: Segregation of HIV-Positive Prisoners in Alabama and South Carolina" -- recommends that the department of corrections in Alabama and South Carolina (the only two states in the country that still segregate HIV-positive prisoners) end that policy. Instead it recommends that prisoners with HIV receive a mandatory assignment to designated housing. "I think it's time these archaic and outdated policies end," said Megan McLemore, a researcher in the health and human rights division with the New York-based Human Rights Watch. Read More. |
