AL Called Upon To Stop HIV Segregation

Two human rights organizations have told the Alabama Department of Correc­tions that segregating its HIV-positive in­mates is both discriminatory and a serious human rights violation.

A report released this week -- "Sen­tenced to Stigma: Segregation of HIV-Posi­tive Prisoners in Alabama and South Caro­lina" -- recommends that the department of corrections in Alabama and South Carolina (the only two states in the country that still segregate HIV-positive prisoners) end that policy.

Instead it recommends that prisoners with HIV receive a mandatory assignment to designated housing.

"I think it's time these archaic and out­dated policies end," said Megan McLemore, a researcher in the health and human rights division with the New York-based Human Rights Watch.
