| Sentenced To Life, Prisoners Getting Taste of Freedom |

RALEIGH -- The state has tried hard to keep inmates sentenced to life in the 1970s locked up, but the prison system has already determined many of them are safe enough to be among law-abiding citizens. Of the 27 inmates who in October were caught in a political and legal battle over their freedom, two have been paroled and another two will be paroled in June. Four have permission to leave prison without guards to work or worship. Others in the group have had permission to work in the community or visit relatives but lost those rights through prison transfers or work injuries. Alford Jones - one of the inmates whose imminent release began the controversy in October - worked at a chicken plant outside Wilmington until he injured his shoulder; he met his wife during a weekend visit to an area church. He's been approved for parole in June. Faye Brown, another 1970s lifer, spends most of her waking hours outside prison. Every morning she pulls on dress slacks and a blouse and heads to her job organizing classes and paperwork at a beauty school in Southeast Raleigh.
