DOC Says School's Fate Uncertain

IRMA -- The number of juveniles held at the Lincoln Hills School in Irma has dropped 66 percent since 1996 -- a decline so steep that the state is considering closing the detention facility.

Gov. Jim Doyle appointed a task force this month to determine how the Department of Corrections should respond to a decade-long drop in juvenile arrests statewide, the plunging juvenile inmate population and a projected Juvenile Corrections budget deficit of $25 million over the next two years.

The 11-person committee of judges, a former school administrator, faith leaders and youth organization leaders will evaluate Lincoln Hills and another male juvenile correction facility, Ethan Allen School in Wales. The committee will visit the two institutions and prepare a recommendation for Doyle by the end of May.

What the future holds for Lincoln Hills is anyone's guess, but change does not come as a surprise to Lincoln Hills Superintendent Paul Westerhaus. The facility now actually has more staff members than offenders.
