| Iowa Inmate Relocation Still Needs Alternative |

Some residents of Des Moines' south side were bitterly disappointed when the Iowa Legislature pulled the plug on plans to relocate some men housed at the Fort Des Moines correctional facility. They weren't alone: State and local corrections officials were equally disappointed at losing an opportunity to add desperately needed space for programs that divert criminal offenders from jail and prison. The low-security work-release facility at the former military fort has long been a sore point with nearby residents. The fact that the facility houses about 20 convicted sex offenders does not help, particularly since it is next to the Des Moines Zoo. But the Legislature this session withdrew $18 million that had been budgeted for a new sex offenders facility on a different site. Instead, lawmakers appropriated $1 million to build what will amount to a fence between the facility and the zoo, a signal to neighbors that Fort Des Moines will not be going away anytime soon.
