A convicted felon serving a life sentence is accused of attacking a prison librarian at Tomoka Correctional Institution in Fla., slicing his head and face with a razor, officials and family members said. Police say Howard Dozier Jr., who has already served 20 years of a life sentence for armed burglary, pounced on the librarian at 3:30 p.m. last Sunday. Samy Ghaly was left slashed "from the top of his head to his throat," said his son, Ramy Ghaly, 16. "I was shocked," the younger Ghaly said. "I don't think he's ever had any problems before." Police say Dozier left the library, which is housed in a free-standing building in the prison complex, after the attack and was arrested. The weapon was recovered, officials said. Prison officials said they did not think the attack was a hate crime or racially motivated and said the motive is unknown. Ghaly, who immigrated to the United States from Egypt about five years ago, was in satisfactory condition last Monday night at Halifax Medical Center. Dozier, who will likely be charged in coming days, was moved to the Florida State Prison in Starke, Department of Corrections spokeswoman Debbie Buchanan said. Dozier's Department of Corrections record shows he has been in and out of custody in Florida since 1978 on charges ranging from sexual battery with a weapon to escape. He has been locked up since 1984. Ghaly taught masonry classes to inmates before becoming the librarian. A father of two sons, he appeared in a News-Journal story about the prison library in April and runs the library with a staff of inmate clerks. Dozier was not working in the library, officials said. |
