SAN DIEGO -- At least 282 people rounded up in a multi-agency crackdown on gangs associated with cross-border crimes, including drug and human trafficking, were facing charges Tuesday ranging from probation violations to smuggling. A contingent of nearly 500 local, state and federal law enforcement personnel carried out the sweep dubbed "Operation Allied Shield," starting Friday evening and wrapping up early Saturday, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. Those arrested, including 24 documented gang members and eight gang associates, were booked on suspicion of various offenses, including drug trafficking, human smuggling, driving while intoxicated, and parole and probation violations. The sweep also resulted in the seizure of about 165 pounds of marijuana, 21 pounds of methamphetamine, six pounds of cocaine and a pound of heroin, sheriff's officials said. Read More. |
