| Inmate Released Almost a Year Early |

The state prison system, which has wrongly confined at least 15 prisoners beyond their release dates in recent years, miscalculated again last week, freeing an inmate nearly a year early. The inmate, a convicted drug dealer who was released 11 months prematurely, was taken back into custody by the Department of Correction Apprehension Unit and Clinton police hours later, according to Diane Wiffin, a spokeswoman for the department. Another inmate, who had been convicted of manslaughter, was released two months late the same day. Two prison system employees have been suspended with pay as a result of Thursday’s errors, which involved inmates at the Boston Pre-Release Center, a minimum-security facility in Roslindale for prisoners about to be freed, Wiffin said. The department is double-checking release dates of other freed prison ers calculated by the suspended employees to make sure they were correct. Wiffin said the errors were discovered by the Central Date Computation Unit, which is responsible for catching the kind of sentence miscalculations first reported in 2007 by the Globe Spotlight Team. The unit consists of 20 employees in a central location who verify the release dates of prisoners, rather than rely on each prison’s own calculations, she said. Read More. |
