A suspected gang member attacked an officer at the San Mateo (Calif.) County jail last Thursday in a sudden outburst of violence that sheriff's officials have been predicting would occur as the result of staffing cutbacks at the overcrowded facility. During a morning break period in which inmates were released from their cells, jail officials say Rafael Jaime, 20, of San Bruno, began hitting the lone officer assigned to supervise a recreation area. The deputy, a two-year veteran, summoned help and several deputies subdued the suspect. The deputy suffered a small laceration on the head and a sprained arm, and was treated and released from Sequoia Hospital by mid-afternoon. One of the responding deputies suffered a dislocated shoulder in the fray and was hospitalized briefly. Their names were not released by the Sheriff's Office. Jaime has been charged with assault on a peace officer resulting in injury and alleged gang involvement. Six other inmates were present at the time of the attack, but none were involved in the ruckus. Jail administrators have been warning for some time that overcrowding and cutbacks to the number of deputies supervising inmates is creating hazardous conditions. There are about 940 inmates at the jail, which is rated to hold 688 inmates. Inmates have been packed into group tanks where tensions are high and fights are increasingly common, deputies said. |
