Bill Could Send Inmates Back to County Jail

A bill that would reduce Missouri’s prison population by 2,000 inmates and is projected to save Missouri taxpayers millions of dollars was passed by the Missouri Senate on Friday. However, the bill could result in sending more prisoners back to the Dallas County Detention Center, thus costing county taxpayers more money. The bill still must be approved by the Missouri House and signed by Gov. Jay Nixon before it becomes law. Wayne Rieschel, Dallas County prosecuting attorney, is concerned about the effects of the bill. “It’s just another of a long line of instances where the Legislature has no clue,” he said. “If you do the crime, you should do the time. If there is no fear of incarceration, we will have three times as many criminals to deal with. Now, how is that going to save money?” Read More.
