Wernersville Community Corrections Center residents collected 103 bags of garbage Thursday in western Berks County during a roadside cleanup. The community service project was scheduled as part of the Great American Cleanup, said Traci Jacobson, the center's campus director. "We wanted to give back to the community and do community service," she said. The center on the grounds of Wernersville State Hospital in South Heidelberg Township is run by the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections. It houses about 240 residents, including pre-release state prison inmates and parolees. The center has been controversial in the Wernersville area since some people have raised safety concerns about center residents leaving the campus and visiting local businesses.
