Burglar Gets 18 Years in Prison

A man who represented himself at his trial, frequently insulting the judge and prosecutors and making critical mistakes in front of the jury, will spend 18 years in prison with no possibility of parole for aggravated robbery.

Gary Dewayne Thompson, 32, remained belligerent at his sentencing hearing Monday, calling Hamilton County Criminal Court Judge Barry Steelman "racist" and claiming the entire prosecution against him had been "illegal."

Yet it was not Mr. Thompson's demeanor or mistakes at trial that ultimately led to such a long sentence in the Tennessee Department of Corrections. His crime -- holding up a convenience store clerk with a knife for $80 -- normally does not command such a harsh punishment.

Mr. Thompson's three prior convictions for aggravated robbery were the biggest factor, Judge Steelman said, coupled with his bad behavior in court that demonstrated a deeper inability to take responsibility for his actions.
