| Indiana DOC Faces More Budget Cuts |

LA PORTE — State agencies are being asked to cut their budgets again, and some local branches don’t know where the reductions will be made yet. Last week state agencies, including those that run prisons, protect children and maintain highways, were sent a memo from the state budget director telling them to cut their spending by another 5 percent during the fiscal year beginning July 1. They already cut 10 percent from their spending a few months ago. One of the local agencies that could possibly be affected is the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City. Indiana Department of Corrections spokesperson Doug Garrison said his department is still trying to determine where the cuts will be made, and probably won’t know for a couple of weeks. “Typically we try and maintain public safety,” he said. “We try to find areas other than custodial related responsibilities to find room. We want to keep the correction officers there and the facility well staffed. We will do our best not to cut, but we will try and identify cost savings measures.” He said the department has experienced several cuts the last couple of years, explaining that it previously found savings by consolidating facility missions and moving offenders to under utilized facilities.
