Deep beneath Cellblock 14 at Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, four small, dark prison cells sit quietly under a low ceiling off a narrow hallway. These four solitary punishment cells are empty today, but after being built in 1927, the most vicious and corrupt criminals were shut up in these tombs for days or even months due to bad behavior. This season, for the first time ever, visitors to the historic location will be invited to experience this area of the prison, known not so fondly to past inmates as the “Klondike.” Site manager Fran Dolan said the underground, solitary area was constructed in 1927 by inmates, and designed by a Harvard University-educated architect who was serving time for fraud.
