| Bill Would Pay For Laid Off Guards |

SPRINGFIELD -- Although it remains unclear where the money will come from, Gov. Pat Quinn signed legislation Monday aimed at making sure the state's prison guards get paid in June. The stopgap spending measure was needed because the budget approved last summer was based on Quinn laying off hundreds of prison guards. But the layoffs were blocked by the union representing the workers, leaving the state still on the hook for meeting about $31 million in payroll. The move was approved over Republican objections. GOP lawmakers said the Illinois Department of Corrections should cut spending to make up the shortfall. The measure also contains funding for other state programs, including a $1.5 million grant for a methamphetamine pilot project at the Franklin County youth detention center. Read More. |
